Ashley Dodson – Children’s Hospital patient
portrait of her and possibly a portrait of her family – husband, Glen, and 10 month old baby boy. Ashley was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a pediatric cancer, when she was 22. Eight months prior to her diagnosis she had gotten married, bought a new house, and started a new job. She was also a full-time college student. Because osteosarcoma is a “childhood cancer” Ashley was treated by pediatric oncologists at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. She had a 7-hour surgery to reconstruct her knee/leg where the sarcoma was located, and went through 29 weeks of chemo. She is part of a patient population few think of, young adults diagnosed with pediatric illnesses. Ashley is now cancer free. She has since had a baby, Triptan, who is 10 months old.
